Our Mission

The London Road Safety Council (LRSC) was established over a century ago with the primary goal of reducing road casualties across London. Originally founded as the London Accident Prevention Council, the organisation remains dedicated to making London’s roads safer for all — pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and passengers.

Our mission is clear and essential: to raise awareness of road safety, support educational initiatives, and foster collaboration between London boroughs, transport authorities, and enforcement agencies.

A Brief History

The Council’s roots trace back to the early 20th century when increasing traffic and rapid urban growth highlighted the need for a unified approach to road safety. Initially named the London Accident Prevention Council (LAPC), the organisation focused on public awareness campaigns and accident prevention efforts in schools and communities.

Throughout the years, LRSC has spearheaded successful campaigns such as “Mind That Child,” “Courtesy Cools,” and “Drive Safely – Think CAT,” which helped shape public attitudes toward safer road behaviours.

In 2009, the organisation officially became the London Road Safety Council, modernising its structure while staying true to its original purpose. Today, LRSC continues to serve as a key platform for sharing best practices and enhancing safety standards across all 33 London boroughs.

What We Do

Education and Awareness

We design and distribute educational materials, campaigns, and digital resources to raise awareness about road safety. Our initiatives focus on schools, local communities, and professional drivers.

Training and Development

LRSC offers training for road safety professionals, teachers, and community leaders. Through workshops and seminars, we promote evidence-based approaches and encourage innovation in road safety management.

Partnership and Collaboration

As a citywide network, LRSC connects local authorities, Transport for London (TfL), the Metropolitan Police, and other key partners. We facilitate cooperation, policy discussions, and shared projects aimed at reducing road injuries and fatalities.

Campaigns and Projects

We regularly coordinate projects focused on improving infrastructure, promoting responsible driving, and protecting vulnerable road users. Many of these projects are supported by research and feedback from the community.

Governance and Membership

The London Road Safety Council is a registered charity (Charity No. 1006101). Its members include elected councillors and professional road safety officers representing every London borough. Meetings are held quarterly, with additional conferences and an Annual General Meeting (AGM) that brings together professionals from the transport and safety sectors. The Council operates under a formal constitution, ensuring transparency in decision-making.

Our Core Values

Collaboration: We work together with London boroughs and stakeholders to create safer environments.

Evidence-led Policy: All recommendations are based on research, data, and proven results.

Public Engagement: We believe education is key to long-term behavioural change.

Protection of Vulnerable Users: Our initiatives focus on protecting children, pedestrians, cyclists, and other high-risk groups.

Adaptability: LRSC responds to new challenges, such as e-scooters, emerging technologies, and changing traffic behaviours.

Looking Ahead

The London Road Safety Council is committed to achieving Vision Zero — a future where no one is killed or seriously injured on London’s roads. Through education, innovation, and collaboration, we continue working toward a safer, more sustainable city for all.
